Tai Chi is learned by doing. The beginner class format is quite simple. You do not have to be in great physical shape to start learning - people of all ages and conditions can learn. The moves can be performed in any comfortable clothing. It is recommended that you wear shoes that offer good support and balance, like comfortable walking shoes or sneakers.

In observance of African American History Month, we will present the 1990 film Glory starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington & Morgan Freeman from TriStar Pictures; Directed by Ed Zwick Rated R (Identification will be checked upon admission) 122 minutes. The film is a dramatic account of the American Civil War’s first all-black regiment, led by an idealistic, privileged, northern white commander Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), fighting not only the enemy, but also convention and prejudice. This stunning drama is based on Shaw’s Civil War letters.

Important changes to the OCLC NetLibrary Service and to the FirstSearch Service.

OCLC and EBSCO Publishing have announced that EBSCO has acquired the NetLibrary Division. The purchase includes the NetLibrary eBook and eAudiobook platform as well as operations and infrastructure in Boulder, Colorado. As eBooks become mainstream components of a library's eContent collections, there is increasing value to libraries to be able to integrate eBook acquisitions and delivery with other electronic databases and eJournals. EBSCO will maintain and enhance the NetLibrary platform and will also work to integrate NetLibrary eBooks into the EBSCOhost platform. There will be no interruption in service to libraries.

We are also announcing an important change to our FirstSearch content services. OCLC is transitioning out of our role as reseller of vendor-owned content. Therefore we will transfer or discontinue sale of the vendor-owned databases on FirstSearch when subscriptions have ended. We will instead increase our focus for both FirstSearch and WorldCat.org on providing libraries with access to a rich set of library-owned content and increasing visibility and access to the full scope of a library's collection. We will work with libraries, publishers and other information providers to expand WorldCat.org as a comprehensive platform for eContent. As a part of this migration, EBSCO has acquired the rights to license a select number of vendor-owned databases that we currently offer on FirstSearch. Our long-term relationship with H.W. Wilson is also changing as we will work together to transition from reselling Wilson databases on FirstSearch to indexing Wilson databases in WorldCat Local over the coming months. There will be no interruption in service to libraries.

Elimination of State Aid to Libraries. Don't let it happen!!!

To the Florida Library Community,

On Wednesday, March 10, 2010, the House and Senate Transportation and Economic Development Committees both adopted preliminary positions eliminating State Aid to Public Libraries.

Most legislators want to fund state aid, and it is up to us to generate enough contacts and pressure to give them the justification to restore it. Both Committees are expected to report out their bills in the next week or so - the Senate has set Friday, March 19^th as the date they will report out their bill. This means that the best time for us to act is right now.

HIGHLAND CITY, FL – October 12, 2009 – On Saturday, September 26, 2009, the Florida Publishers Association (FPA) presented its 2009 President’s Book Awards to members whose books were chosen as best in 16 different categories and one special category, President’s Pick, chosen by FPA’s President, Chris Angermann, of New Chapter Publisher, Sarasota, FL.

FPA Book Awards Chair, Betsy Lampe, president of Rainbow Books, Inc., Lakeland, FL, was the mistress of ceremonies for the President’s Book Awards Banquet at The Helmsley Sandcastle Hotel on Lido Beach, Sarasota.

“While it’s quite an honor for the publishers, authors, illustrators and designers whose books won gold and silver medals” says Lampe, who also acts as the group’s association executive, “the awards also provide a new platform from which the publishers can launch new marketing efforts. Publishing is a business, and receiving industry recognition, such as winning in the FPA 2009 President’s Book Awards, can help reviewers, retailers and readers identify some great and, perhaps, previously undiscovered books.”

The evening awards banquet was part of the two-day FPA 2009 Publishing Ed-U-Conference, the theme for which was “Strategies for Success.” Participants attended presentations by nationally recognized book experts and successful independent publishers in Florida.

Every day, we are inundated with vast amounts of information. A 24-hour news cycle and thousands of global television and radio networks, coupled with an immense array of online resources, have challenged our long-held perceptions of information management. Rather than merely possessing data, we must also learn the skills necessary to acquire, collate, and evaluate information for any situation. This new type of literacy also requires competency with communication
technologies, including computers and mobile devices that can help in our day-to-day decisionmaking. National Information Literacy Awareness Month highlights the need for all Americans to be adept in the skills necessary to effectively navigate the Information Age.

Though we may know how to find the information we need, we must also know how to evaluate it. Over the past decade, we have seen a crisis of authenticity emerge. We now live in a world where anyone can publish an opinion or perspective, whether true or not, and have that opinion amplified within the information marketplace. At the same time, Americans have unprecedented access to the diverse and independent sources of information, as well as institutions such as libraries and universities, that can help separate truth from fiction and signal from noise.

Our Nation's educators and institutions of learning must be aware of -- and adjust to -- these new realities. In addition to the basic skills of reading, writing, and arithmetic, it is equally important that our students are given the tools required to take advantage of the information available to them. The ability to seek, find, and decipher information can be applied to countless life decisions, whether financial, medical, educational, or technical.

This month, we dedicate ourselves to increasing information literacy awareness so that all citizens understand its vital importance. An informed and educated citizenry is essential to the functioning of our modern democratic society, and I encourage educational and community institutions across the country to help Americans find and evaluate the information they seek, in all its forms.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 2009 as National Information Literacy Awareness Month. New pilot puts WorldCat.org on your mobile phone

OCLC is pleased to announce the release of the WorldCat Mobile pilot—a program that brings WorldCat.org to hand-held communications devices, such as PDAs and smartphones. The new application was created in collaboration with Boopsie, Inc., a provider of software for mobile and cellular devices. For the initial pilot, WorldCat Mobile will be operational throughout the United States and Canada. The pilot will gather data to inform and help shape future mobile access to WorldCat.org.

Thanks to advanced global positioning capabilities found in many smartphones and PDAs, WorldCat Mobile users will be able to find local library materials no matter where they happen to be. Users will also receive a map of the library location.

To speed the search and discovery process, WorldCat Mobile uses “multiprefix incremental search,” which means users can simply type the first few letters of a book title, library location or book category and matching results will immediately appear on screen.

Using word verification to help digitize books

Everyone has had to type a word or sequence of symbols to verify that they are a human before signing up for an online account like Facebook, Flickr, Gmail etc. I will have to type these words/symbols before posting this to various blogs. These verifications are also known as CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart).

A Carnegie Mellon University scientist, Luis von Ahn, calculated that people waste close to 500,000 hours every day typing these characters. Luis von Ahn consequently developed reCAPTCHA which connects all of this immense brain power to help digitize old books and he and his colleagues reported in Science that “over the last year Web users have transcribed enough text to fill up more than 17,600 books, with better than 99 percent accuracy.”

Reading with the Rays @ Main Library

Hey Kids! Meet Rays players Trever Miller and Cliff Floyd at the St. Petersburg Main Library, 3745 9th Ave N. on Wednesday, July 2 at 12:30 p.m. as the Rays lead off their “Reading with the Rays” program for school-age children.

The Tampa Bay Rays have teamed up with the St. Petersburg Times' Newspaper in Education program, The Rays Foundation, Helios Education Foundation, Pinellas Public Library Cooperative and Hillsborough County to sponsor a reading program that will encourage students to keep reading during the summer. In addition to improving their reading skills, children will also be rewarded with prizes for completing 24 hours of reading from selected lists. For each hour of reading, students will advance around the bases until they hit a reading “home run” and the opportunity to win game tickets.

Game cards will be available in Pinellas and Hillsborough County public libraries by July 1 so start reading and become a winner!

Britannica Lets Online Visitors Suggest Revisions

New iTunes Music Listening Stations

After years of visiting book and music stores like Borders, Virgin Records, and FYE and having an opportunity to listen to any CD’s tracks before making a purchasing decision has been a luxury that I certainly have taken for granted. Libraries usually do not have this luxury, but why? Right outside my office is a monolithic filing cabinet where all of our CDs are hidden. That’s right, they are hidden! I have heard first hand the cries of many library users who have become so frustrated when trying to find a CD. It is true that these CDs are difficult to find because they have stickers and other “library stuff” stuck all over them. And it doesn’t help that they are tightly squeezed into this filing cabinet.

So, I asked myself wouldn’t it be nice if we could open up our CD collection for people to browse and listen to these CDs before they decided to check them out or not? There are several libraries doing just that, so I decided to take it seriously and set up a system. Luckily, I was able to get my hands on 2 old PCs and set them up to become our music listening stations by using iTunes. Although 2,000 songs have been digitized, not all of our collection is digitized yet. That will come very soon. So, please visit the West St. Petersburg Community Library at St. Petersburg College and try it out!

Also, I have been working on creating a web page based on the XML data that iTunes creates. This web page is still a work in progress, but you can check it out at: http://www.spcollege.edu/SPG/WSPCL/iTunes%20Music%20Library.xml. Firefox doesn’t like it yet, but I am working on it. The links should open up the iTunes application so that you can listen to a 30 second clip. I will have the call number links going to our library catalog very soon.

Twine will sort through an amalgamation of information that you have foraged for and accumulated over the years and try to make sense of it all. Nova Spivack released the beta version of Twine recently and said that he is “trying to amplify human intelligence with machine intelligence” (Thompson). Twine is working to help make sense of the machine-readable Semantic Web.

The application lets Web users search the collections of WorldCat libraries and monitor favorite WorldCat lists—their own lists, or those created by other users—right from personalized Facebook pages. Search results are returned from WorldCat.org.

The application includes a Home screen with WorldCat search box, as well as quick links to WorldCat searches based on personal interests a user has input in his or her Facebook profile. The application also includes tabbed access to:

- a built-in advanced WorldCat search
- a "Something to Read" panel that displays books recently added to other users' WorldCat lists
- a panel where the user can invite other Facebook friends to install the WorldCat application

On a user's Facebook profile page, the application adds a custom Facebook "box" with basic WorldCat search. The profile's owner can expand or collapse the box's visibility, and reposition it to a preferred location by dragging its title bar.

Welcome to the Third Annual SPC Reads!

This is our third year of SPC Reads, a collaborative common reading program sponsored by the Michael M. Bennett Libraries that encourages creativity, critical thinking, community, and interdisciplinary activities. During the month of March we invite you to join us in reading the widely acclaimed book The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and participating in a wide range of campus activities including screenings of the recently released films The Kite Runner and Charlie Wilson’s War, panel discussions, and kite flying (perfect for the month of March!).

Set in pre-Taliban Afghanistan, this novel is “an epic tale of fathers and sons, of friendship and betrayal that takes us from Afghanistan in the final days of the monarchy to the atrocities of the present. Privileged young narrator Amir comes of age during the last peaceful days of the monarchy in Afghanistan then must endure revolution, invasion and a country’s long struggle to triumph over violent forces. Piano Concert Series with Dolores Gadevsky and Lin He

St. Petersburg College Piano Concert Series Performance with Dolores Gadevsky, Piano and Lin He, Violin.

Dolores Weller Gadevsky has served as piano faculty at Chautauqua Institution, The Eastman School of Music, Los Angeles Conservatory, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Csehy Summer School of Music, and the University of Central Arkansas, where she was also a member of the faculty trio. She is currently serving as Adjunct Professor at
St. Petersburg College.

Born in Shanghai, China, Lin He began his musical training at the age of five. Currently a Doctoral candidate at the Eastman School of Music, Mr. He works under the tutelage of Zvi Zeitlin. Lin He is now serving as the Assistant Professor of Violin at the Louisiana State University School of Music in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

LINCCWeb in Facebook March 7, 2008!

As part of an ongoing effort to make LINCCWeb available when and where students need it, CCLA developed a pared down LINCCWeb interface that students can easily add to their Facebook accounts and then have at the ready if they need to do a quick search for class or homework. They can even share the LINCCWeb application with their friends in Facebook.

Requirements for searching LINCCWeb will be the same in Facebook as they are now: public users who install the LINCCWeb application can search community college library holdings, but only users registered at a Florida community college can search licensed electronic resources. The application will be available beginning next Friday, March 7! This is a first step at making LINCCWeb discoverable from popular social networking sites.

Rudresh Mahanthappa Quartet - Codebook Project Concert at SPC Music Center

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Chamber Music America, St. Petersburg College and EMIT present a special Encore concert of Codebook by Rudresh Mahanthappa with Vijay Iyer on piano, François Moutin on bass, and Damion Reid on drums.

Guggenheim fellow Rudresh Mahanthappa is one of the most innovative young musicians and composers in jazz today. Named a "Rising Star" of the alto saxophone by the Downbeat International Critics Poll for the past four years, #2 in 2006, Rudresh has incorporated the culture of his Indian ancestry and has fused myriad influences to create a truly groundbreaking artistic vision.

St. Petersburg College Music Center is at the corner of 66th St. and 5th Ave. N in St. Petersburg. SPC students and staff have free admission. Donation admission is $10(cash) at the door. This concert benefits music student scholarships at St. Petersburg College.

Nathan Laube has been a perennial favorite of SPC audiences since making his southern U.S. debut at St. Petersburg College in 2005. Currently in his fourth year as a pupil of Alan Morrison at The Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, Nathan has been busy this past year with performances ranging from NYC to Cape Town, South Africa. “One of America’s fastest rising young stars” does not begin to describe the boundless gifts this engaging young man brings to his electrifying performances.
